Troubleshooting synchronization problems in Bitwarden

Last update: 09/09/2026

  • Bitwarden allows you to manually force synchronization from your mobile device, the extension, the desktop, and the command line.
  • An empty vault may be due to an incorrect active account or selecting a different server region.
  • An incorrect date, a VPN, a blocker, or a service issue may prevent the connection.
  • If the passwords appear in Bitwarden but not on the websites, the problem is with autofill and not synchronization.
Bitwarden does not sync passwords between devices

You open Bitwarden on your mobile device and discover that passwords are missing that appear on your computer or the web version. In other cases, the vault appears completely empty after installing the app on a new device. While this situation is alarming, it usually means that the client hasn't yet downloaded the correct data, you've logged into a different account, or you're connected to a different server region.

Before modifying or importing anything, open the web vault and verify that your credentials are still there. If you just transferred them from Google's password manager on AndroidAlso, verify that the import was completed on the account you normally use.

Don't re-import the same file immediately, as this could create duplicate entries. The first step is to identify why. Bitwarden does not synchronize the vault on the affected device.

How Bitwarden syncing works

How Bitwarden Vault Sync Works

When you add, modify, or delete an item from any Bitwarden application, the change is sent to the server associated with your account. Then, other clients must synchronize to download the updated vault version.

Your personal items in the web vault stay up to date. Extensions, mobile apps, the desktop program, and the command-line tool are synced upon login and periodically while you're unlocked.

The elements belonging to an organization function slightly differently: Bitwarden indicates that they are synchronized between users and client applications every 30 minutesIf you need to see a change immediately, you can run a manual synchronization.

You should also be aware that Bitwarden maintains an encrypted copy of the vault on your device. This means you can access previously downloaded data even if you temporarily lose your connection. However, offline mode is essentially read-only and does not allow you to download recent changes from the server.

How to force manual synchronization

The first solution is to instruct the application to query the server again. The procedure depends on the client you are using:

  • Mobile application: Open Settings, go to Other, and tap Sync now.
  • Browser extension: Go to Settings, open Vault Options, and select Sync Vault Now.
  • Desktop application: Open the File menu and click Sync vault.
  • Command line: executes bw sync in the CLI of Bitwarden.

On your mobile device, you can also enable the option to sync when updating. Then, go to the Vaults tab and scroll down to request a new download.

If you have multiple accounts added to the same app, remember that manual synchronization only affects the account that is activeSwitch profiles before repeating the process.

Check the account and server region

If the vault appears completely empty, first check the email address you used to log in. Bitwarden allows multiple accounts within the same client, so it's easy to accidentally open a different profile.

You should also check the server selected on the login screen. Bitwarden's cloud has separate regions for The United States and the European UnionAn account only exists in the region where it was created, even if you use the same email address in both.

Therefore, if your vault is hosted in Europe but the application tries to access the US server, you won't find the expected data. Log out, select the correct region from the server dropdown, and log back in.

Those using their own installation must select the appropriate option and enter their exact server address. An incorrect URL may connect you to the wrong instance or prevent the application from downloading the vault at all.

Before continuing, also check that you don't have a filter, a specific collection, or a search term enabled. If only some credentials are missing, the content might be hidden by the selected view and not due to a synchronization issue.

Check the date, connection, and service status

Check the date, connection, and service status on Bitwarden

An incorrect time can prevent the application from establishing a secure connection with the server. Bitwarden uses TLS to protect communications, and a significant difference between timestamps can cause validation to fail.

Activate automatic configuration date, time and time zone on your mobile device or computer. If it was already enabled, disable it, re-enable it, and restart Bitwarden before attempting another synchronization.

Also check the following items:

  • Temporarily switch from WiFi to mobile data, or vice versa.
  • Disable your VPN, proxy, or ad blocker during the trial.
  • Check that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking Bitwarden.
  • Open the Bitwarden status page to rule out a general outage.
  • Update the application or extension to the latest available version.

Interference from VPNs and blockers is most common with browser extensions. If synchronization works when these are disabled, you'll need to check their filters or add an exception for the domains used by Bitwarden.

What to do if only one device fails

When the web version and other devices display the correct passwords, the problem is limited to the client that isn't updating. Completely close the application or browser, reopen it, and perform another manual synchronization.

If it continues the same way, follow this order:

  1. Verify that the web vault contains all the important elements.
  2. Update Bitwarden from its official store or from your browser.
  3. Log out of the affected device.
  4. Please select the appropriate region or server again.
  5. Log in and wait for the initial download to finish.

Do not uninstall the application or delete its local data before confirming that the information is saved on the server. If a credential appears only on one device and not in the web vault, it's advisable to securely copy it before logging out.

If you use Bitwarden on your own server

In a self-hosted installation, the problem might be on the server, not the application. Verify that the instance is running, that the domain is accessible from the device, and that the HTTPS certificate is still valid.

It's also important to keep the server up to date. A significant difference between the instance version and the application version can cause incompatibilities after updating the mobile, desktop, or extension.

If access works within your home network but fails from outside, check your reverse proxy, DNS, and remote access settings. If no application can connect, check the server logs before modifying client settings.

Synchronization and autocomplete are not the same thing

The passwords might appear within Bitwarden, but not when opening a website or application. In that case, the vault is indeed synchronized, and the problem lies with the... autocomplete.

Verify that Bitwarden is selected as your password provider on Android, iOS, or your browser. Also, check that the address saved in the URI field matches the website or application where you are trying to use the credential.

Forcing a sync will not fix a disabled autofill permission. Similarly, reinstalling the app will not correct a credential associated with an incorrect address.

What to do if Bitwarden still won't sync

If the problem persists on all your devices, first check the service status. If only one device is experiencing issues, note the application version, operating system, selected region, and the error message displayed before contacting Bitwarden support.

Avoid creating another account, changing regions, or re-importing all your passwords as a workaround. Bitwarden regions are independent environments, and data is not automatically transferred from one to another.

In most cases, synchronization will work again after forcing an update, selecting the correct account and server, adjusting the device time, or temporarily disabling a VPN or blocker. Checking the web vault first allows you to perform these tests without compromising credentials that are already securely stored.
