- The RDP clipboard can transfer files without necessarily showing the local disk.
- A policy can allow text and block documents.
- Restarting rdpclip.exe helps with temporary crashes, but it doesn't change the policies.
- For large files, it's advisable to check the method's limit and use an authorized alternative.
Si Remote Desktop copies text but not filesThis does not necessarily mean the connection is misconfigured. The clipboard may accept text while a policy is blocking documents, the client has limitations, or the file exceeds the size allowed by that method.
To find the cause, it's helpful to separate two functions: copying and pasting between the local and remote computers, and accessing a redirected local drive from within the session. Both allow you to move files, but they have settings and restrictions that you should check separately.
Why does Remote Desktop copy text but not files?

The RDP clipboard can transfer text, images, and filesDepending on the client's capabilities and session configuration, your C: drive does not need to be visible on the remote computer for any file copying to work.
Drive redirection is another feature: it allows you to open a drive on your local computer from a remote session and copy its files using Explorer.
However, there is an important relationship between the two. If the administrator blocks drive redirection using a group policy or Intune, file transfer via the clipboard may also be blocked, even though the text file continues to function.
Before changing any settings, try using a small text file saved in a local folder and a different destination folder where you can write. Test in both directions to see if the problem only affects one direction.
Check the clipboard on the MSTSC client
If you use the classic app Remote Desktop Connection If you're on Windows, check your settings before connecting:
- Open
mstsc.exe. - Press Show options.
- Enter Local resources.
- Check that the box is checked Clipboard.
- Reconnect and repeat the test.
To test files, use Copying and pasting between two Explorer windowsDo not take drag-and-drop between desktops as an equivalent test: its availability depends on the client and the environment.
If the text is already copying correctly, the clipboard checkbox is probably active. In that case, continue with the file restrictions, document size, and session status.
Review the policies that may block the files
On domain-managed computers, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Windows 365, effective configuration may depend on GPO, Intune, and the properties of the remote environment. Activating an option on the client does not override an administrative lock.
If you have authorization to review the remote computer, check this path in the group policies:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Device and Resource Redirection.
The two main directives you need to distinguish are:
- Do not allow clipboard redirection: When enabled, it blocks clipboard redirection.
- Do not allow drive redirection: When enabled, it blocks redirected drives and also file transfers via the clipboard.
In compatible environments, there are also controls that allow certain types of content or restrict a transfer direction. Therefore, the fact that copying text from the local computer to the remote computer works does not prove that the files or the reverse direction are permitted.
In a company, ask the administrator to review the applied settings. The status of a local policy does not always reflect all the controls in the environment.
Restart rdpclip.exe if the failure occurred during the session

If you were able to copy and paste before and the problem appears without having changed the settings, it may be a temporary block of the remote clipboard component.
Within your remote sessionYou can try these steps:
- Open the Task Manager.
- Enter Details and locate
rdpclip.execorresponding to your user. - That process ends.
- Select Run new task.
- Writes
rdpclip.exeand confirms.
Repeat the copy process with a small file. Restarting this process does not remove security restrictions nor does it change the resources that the administrator allows to be transferred.
If it doesn't improve, save your work and try a new connection. When it's necessary to completely close the session, remember that closing the client window might only disconnect it, leaving the applications open.
If only large files fail, change the method.
Microsoft documents that copying files larger than 2 GB via clipboard Remote Desktop Services sessions may fail without displaying an error message.
If small documents transfer but large ones don't, check their size first. For those files, use a redirected drive or an authorized transfer path within your organization.
To enable a local drive in the classic client:
- Open Show options > Local resources > More….
- Unfold Units and select only the ones you need.
- Reconnect to the session.
- Open This team in the Remote Explorer and look for the redirected drive.
If you've redirected the C: drive, you can also try opening it. \\tsclient\C From the Explorer of the remote session. Copy from that location to a folder on the remote computer with sufficient space and permissions.
This option requires that redirection be allowed. If a policy blocks it, simply marking the drive on the client will not be sufficient.
Check the limitations of Windows App and other clients
MSTSC steps do not translate identically to Windows App, a macOS client, or an open browser session. The available functions and their menus depend on the application and the platform.
Check the clipboard and redirection options of the client you are using. In Windows Apps, the administrator can also determine which local resources are available during the connection.
If you need to report the problem to support, please provide the client name and version, the local and remote operating systems, the transfer address, and if it fails, also a small file.
Alternatives when RDP transfer is unavailable
If the environment does not allow file transfer via RDP, use an approved method: a corporate shared folder, an organizational storage service, or an SFTP connection configured for that purpose.
The alternative must respect the environment's permissions and policies. Installing another remote control tool does not guarantee that the transfer is permitted, nor does it correct the RDP configuration.
To diagnose the problem, save the test results: text and small file, both directions, document size, and client used. With this data, you can distinguish between a deliberate restriction, a temporary clipboard issue, or a limitation of the copy method.
