In literature there are various genres and forms of expression. In this article, we will talk about the difference between three of them: the story, the novel and the fable.

The story

The story is a short narrative in which a story is told with a limited number of characters and a simple plot. As an example of a story we can mention “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry or “Cinderella” by the Brothers Grimm.

Characteristics of the story

  • Brevity: its length usually does not exceed 10 pages.
  • Few characters: the characters are few and poorly developed.
  • Action: The plot focuses on the action, not the psychological development of the characters.
  • Simple language: simple and direct language is used.

The novel

The novel is a longer narrative than the story in which a plot is developed with many characters, this allows for greater psychological development of the characters. As examples of novels we can mention “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez or “Don Quixote” by Cervantes.
