Difference between short story, novel and fable

Characteristics of the story

The novel

The novel is a longer narrative than the story in which a plot is developed with many characters, this allows for greater psychological development of the characters. As examples of novels we can mention “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez or “Don Quixote” by Cervantes.

Characteristics of the novel

• Longer length: usually more than 100 pages.
• Greater complexity: the plot and characters are more complex and have more development.
• Psychological reflection: more reflection is given on the psychological development of the characters.
• Careful language: the language used is careful and elaborate.

The fable

The fable is a short and allegorical story in which moral or ethical teachings are expressed. Most fables have animals as protagonists and human values ​​and defects are personified. An example of a fable is “The Hare and the Tortoise.”
